Description

Medical, or Hospital, Unit Coordinators provide administrative support within hospitals where nursing patient care is being provided. By releiving nursing staff of administrative duties, such as receiving new patients to a department, providing visitors with both general and patient-specific information and providing communications between professional health staff, patient care care is improved. To success in this fast-paced environment, Hospital Unit Coordinators must have a working knowledge of medical terminology, be able to manage patient scheduling and records and make sure that there are adequate inventories of supplies on hand. Because of a growing aging population in the US, and an increased focus on standardized medical records, this career field is expected to have excellent growth in the future. A Hospital Unit Coordinator Course can be taken by Cerified Nurse Assistant for 48 units of continuing education, or as an introductory course for students interested in a job in the nursing field. Course includes transcription of physician's orders for diagnostic services, treatments and medications. Students will learn management techniques, communication skills, medical ethics and legalities, medical terminology and interpersonal skills. Students may qualify to take NAHUC Certification Exam upon completion. Note, this class is offered by the San Mateo County Education Office's Regional Occupational Program.
