Description
Phlebotomy is the science of obtaining blood from patients or volunteer donors for medical testing or transfusion. For success in this profession, it takes more than just a needle and an iron stomach. Phlebotomists know how to draw samples from all over a patient when needed, such as from the scalp in geriatrics patients or from the heel on a baby. They also may conduct patient interviews, take vital signs, and collect and transport laboratory specimens. As one of the fastest growing careers, certified phlebotomists are in demand. Successful training requires one semester of school to complete your certification. Phlebotomists usually work under a physician, a medical laboratory scientist, or a lead phlebotomy technician in a hospital, clinic, blood donation center or medical office. Certification to become a Phlebotomist requires an externship.
