Description

Medical Coding & Billing Specialists work with patient records after medical treatment to insure that the medical records are accurate in the patient's medical history, and also to make sure that the correct procedures are being billed for. These positions require a good knowledge of anatomy and physiology, as well as an understanding of medical treatments and disease progressions. Depending on the type of office setting, the job functions may vary, with Medical Coding Specialists performing more documentation and Medical Billing Specialists dealing with insurance claim forms and handing the interaction between the medical practice and the insurance companies. Obtaining certification for these career paths require two to four semesters. Demand for these careers is strong and will continue to grow as the aging population increases.
